Hello and welcome back to Resbang season! While the writers and artists are hard at work creating the content we will soon consume, we Bookclub Mods have some info for you about this year’s Resbang Book Club!
Who are we? What do we do?
For anyone new to Bookclub, our mission is to read all participating Resbangs. We do this with your help! Everyone who joins this year will be randomly assigned three fics that don’t contain any of the squicks/triggers you ask not to receive. From there, you just read and review those fics (or more, if you’re ambitious!) and submit the reviews to us to be counted towards our Resbang Hall of Fame, where those people who read and review the MOST fics are celebrated!
We also run AMAs (Ask Me Anything) for any participating Resbang Bookclub author who wants a chance to talk about their work live with Bookclub readers.
What’s new this year?
Based on feedback we got from you guys last year, we’re changing a few details in how we run Bookclub! This year, we reduced the number of required fics from five to three, because even though 65% of survey respondents said that five was a fine number, we also had comments saying it was too much when also trying to write/art for Resbang, given the timeline we were on!
That said, we’re also changing the timeline this year. We’re trying to give everyone a breather after the final posting day and when we start AMAs so that people have more time to read long fics before AMA scheduling begins. More info on the exact schedule to come!
AMAs are also different. This year, we are requiring that all authors who wish to have an AMA first submit at least one review before they get scheduled. One commenter in our survey asked, “Why make authors participate to do AMA?” and we thought it was important to address this!
The point of Bookclub is to bolster the community that fandom needs in order to thrive. If you are only here to advertise your own work, Bookclub is not for you. We feel very strongly that fandom needs active participation by both readers and content creators (who are often readers themselves) to function at its best, and we do not think that reading and reviewing one fic is too steep a price for the time we put in to hosting and recording the AMAs. This year, signups will open on December 1, 2018 and close on December 14, 2018 at midnight EST. We’ll send out more info on how to sign up when it gets closer to the opening date!
The bookclub mods just wanted to remind you that signups are closing on December 8th (this Friday!!!!!!!!!!!!) so get those signups in so you can review those sweeeet sweeeeet resbang fics & spread that holiday review cheer!!!! ❤

I saw this post by @astropixie about how it’d be nice to review fics on AO3 as you read. A little while back, because I was so in awe of the Clexa fic writers, I made this userscript (can install on Firefox by using Greasemonkey and on Chrome and Opera by using Tampermonkey) so that I could do just that. It doesn’t have the wattpad or soundcloud functionality, it’s just a little thing added on to a page, not something supported by the site itself, but it’s better than nothing.
Hello everyone! Since some people may be new to Discord, we thought we’d explain how our particular server works, with helpful screenshots!
Server basics
So you get into the server. Now what? You’ll see to the left that there are various text channels you can click on. These are going to be where discussions and various forms of yelling and/or crying will take place! Let’s go through what each channel is all about.
This is a place to say hey, chat about general Resbang-related things, and remain spoiler-free. It’s a nice place to introduce yourself if you’re new and make some new friends!
You’ll here a lot more about this in a couple weeks! This is where author AMAs, or Ask Me Anythings, will take place. Any willing author will be scheduled for a night where people can come in and ask them questions about their Resbangs, music that inspired it, how they approached it, and whatever else you’d want to ask them! Stay tuned for more!
This is where discussion of fics that end with major character death, unresolved angst, or generally unhappy endings will be discussed. Some people do not want to hear about sad endings or death, so we’ll keep talk (and crying) about those fics here.
This is where discussion of fics with adult content, like smut or extreme violence or gore, will take place. Even if the fic has other themes, like romance or angst, we ask that any fics with smut or sexually explicit content be kept here so that those who do not wish to read about smut do not have to see it being discussed.
As you can probably guess, any fics that have heavier romance themes will be discussed here as long as they do not also include smut.
This is the chat to go to discuss the endings of fics or any major spoilery bits before the deadlines end. We completely understand that people will read at different speeds and want to have a space for people who read faster (or who don’t mind getting spoiled) to talk about their feelies.
Planning chat is just for the mods so we can organize all this fun stuff – you don’t need to worry about it!
Voice chats
Once we really get going, we’ll have time for people to read fics in voice chat while others listen. These two rooms, sfw and nsfw fic readings, will be there for this! Any fic that does not contain smut or excessive violence/gore can be read in sfw, and the rest in nsfw.
We may add others channels as we go along, but for now, this is our Resbang home. Come on into the general chat and say hi – we’re here to talk about all things Resbang with you!

Welcome to the Resbang Book Club! We’ll be reading and reviewing this year’s Resbang fics together, but to be sure every fic gets the love it deserves, we’re going to have a system in how we do it. So listen up! The following will explain how all this will work.
Much like last year’s Review Squad, we’ll be assigning each person fics to read. When you sign up for book club, you are committing to reading at least five randomly selected stories. This will help every story get a little bit of TLC!
To sign up: Send us an email at resbangbookclub@gmail.com! Include your tumblr username and – in order to help us give you five stories you’ll be comfortable with – please list any content you do not wish to read! This can be specific (ex: “I do not wish to read any stories with graphic violence or sexual content”) or general (ex: “I do not wish to read anything rated higher than R”). Please be as thorough as you can so that we can match you appropriately!
All of this said, you are VERY encouraged to read more than your allotted 5 stories! In fact, in order to really get the reviews going this year, we’ve cooked up some ~fancy incentives~ for you, including:
The Resbang Book Club Discord server! Our goal is to create a reviewing community where people get hype, spread the love and get excited about each other’s stories. Want to do a live reading of a fic in voice chat? Want to yell about angsty scenes or awesome dialogue in our discussion channels? Go for it! Resbang Author AMAs! Want a chance to ask Resbang authors how they came up with that ridiculous plot point, or what music inspired a particular scene? We’ll be scheduling AMAs with authors during and after Resbang to give you the chance to do just that!
The Resbang Reviewer Hall of Fame! Spend Resbang season stocking up on reviews and profit. Here’s how it works: You have until April 12, 2017 – two months after the last story is posted – to read and review as many stories as you can! Keep track of the reviews you make – we’ll be asking you to link/screenshot them to us. After April 12 rolls around, we’ll be making a glorious Hall of Fame post, with special tiers recognizing our most prolific reviewers! Only want to read your assigned 5 fics? No problem, there’s a shoutout section for that too! Get ready to bask in those sweet, sweet bragging rights, Resbang reviewers!
